DESCRIPTION:A milaya is a large rectangular piece of black fabric that beledi women used to wrap around themselves as a modesty garment in Egypt in the 1930’s-1970’s. The milaya is rarely seen on the streets today and is considered very old-fashioned. Manipulation of the milaya was an art\, and it often revealed more than it concealed. \nLatifa will explain how this dance was created for stage and teach characteristic steps and movements. You’ll learn how to wrap the milaya and how to flirt with it — which is the whole point! Milayas and accessories will be available to play with. \nThis event will be held at Latifa’s home studio in Severna Park. Address will be provided when you register. \nLimited to a max of 6 students\, Cost is $45; preregistration only.
