The Fez Tones Hafla is my favorite local event. I'm lucky enough to be the hostess and listen to this wonderful live music every month. In April, the band will be playing one of their new songs, and I will perform a milaya dance to it. I'll be joining guest dancers Odalys, Anna Skibinsky, and Leilah Moon, and headliner Miasia. Tunisian Intensive with HABIBA of Philadelphia

Tunisia has a richly mixed cultural heritage that includes Phoenician, Berber, Roman, early Christian, Islamic and Jewish elements. The folkloric Tunisian style is tribal and earthy and features horizontal twisting of the hips and pelvic movements. The dancer executes twisting movements to increasingly faster music and sometimes dances with scarves or a pot balanced on her head. Ghawazee Intensive Workshop with Habiba

I'm thrilled to be bringing in an expert on the dancing of the Ghawazee (althernate spelling Ghawazi) of Egypt. These traditional street performers of Egypt fascinated westerners for more than a century. Originally, ghawazee were street performers who danced all over Egypt. Edward Lane noted in his 1836 classic Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians that Egypt was celebrated for its public dancing girls, and that the ghawazee were the most famous of them.
